You may have well-shaped teeth and full, naturally appealing lips, but if your upper lip exposes too much of your gums when you smile, your whole smile may look imbalanced and less attractive. This patient came in for a consultation with Beverly hills implant dentist and periodontist Dr. Alex Farnoosh because, while she was very happy with the shape and coloring of her teeth, she felt self-conscious about the way that her smile exposed her gums. After an examination and discussion with Dr. Farnoosh, the patient scheduled a time to undergo a lip-lowering procedure to correct her "gummy" smile.

This patient received a gumm smile procedure to prevent her upper lip from elevating too far above her upper teeth when she smiles. Before the procedure, her teeth and her lips looked smaller and less attractive. After her procedure, you can see that her lips retain their naturally attractive shape, but because the upper lip is closer to the teeth, her lips and teeth have a balanced, attractive look.

While some patients' gums do require adjustment, in most cases Dr. Farnoosh finds that a lip lowering procedure is enough to transform the patient's "gummy" smile and provide a more balanced look to the lips and teeth. For patients who have received a gum-adjustment surgery from another dentist who may have removed too much tissue or whose gums have receded somewhat over the years, Dr. Farnoosh also offers gum grafting procedures to restore a healthier, more balanced amount of tissue.
