The Surgical Procedure in Beverly Hills
Due to the nature of dental implants, your Beverly Hills surgery may take place over several visits, but immediate loading of the dental implants is available in many cases. Depending on your needs, I use local or general anesthetic during each visit. First, after any existing tooth or tooth root is removed, I make a pilot hole in the bone, insert the implant screw, and allow the implant to bond to the bone over a period of a few months. After this, a temporary crown (or prosthetic tooth) is placed on the implant to encourage the gum to grow in a natural shape and assess the visual appeal of the restored tooth. At your next appointment, a permanent crown will be installed on the implant.
Even if you are missing bone in your top jaw, I am able to supplement the bone to give enough area to anchor the dental implant. This procedure, called a sinus lift, involves grafting bone to the maxilla (the upper jaw) to reduce the size of the sinus cavity and create adequate bone to place an implant.
For most patients, I am able to place dental implants without cutting tissue. By using innovative methods, your procedure may not require stitches and I am able to minimize the discomfort, bleeding, and longer recovery time commonly seen with conventional treatment methods. A shortened time between initial implant placement and installation of the crown may be appropriate for select patients, and in specific situations, the implant and crown may be installed during the same procedure. However, keep in mind that most patients require several months for the implant to bond to the bone before the crown is installed.
Risks and Recovery after Your Beverly Hills Dental Implant
After treatment, I will work closely with you to develop a comprehensive care plan, including periodic follow-up visits to monitor the overall health of your implants, natural teeth, and gums. Depending on the patient and the extent of the surgery, swelling, bruising, and discomfort may be mild to moderate, and may last for a few days. Pain medication and antibiotics will help minimize discomfort and speed recovery.
Complications occur in less than 5% of cases, and include the implant failing to integrate into the bone, causing inflammation in soft tissue or bone. Living a healthy lifestyle and watching your diet are the best things you can do to increase your chance of surgical success. For instance, research suggests that smoking significantly increases the chance that your implant will fail, since smoking tends to decrease blood flow to the tissues surrounding the implant and may increase the risk of infection. Dental implants are like your own teeth and will require the same care, such as brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits.
